# Why the Place of Death Matters as Much as the Time

Because the zenith belongs to the observer: latitude sets its declination, and longitude together with the time sets its right ascension. ## What each coordinate does

Picture the celestial sphere as a vast dome over the Earth: where you stand decides which part of the dome you face. Latitude sets how high the zenith sits (declination equals latitude); longitude fixes where it sits east-to-west through the local sidereal time. Only together do they pin a single point onto the sky.

## How much difference does a city make

At one instant, two places a few hundred kilometers apart have zeniths differing by fractions of a degree to a few degrees. Whether that changes the selected star depends on how crowded that patch of sky is: in dense fields a small shift can change the pick; in sparse ones a whole region may contain a single candidate. We do not assume “close enough” — the coordinates used are the coordinates recorded.

## When the place itself is fuzzy

Places can be uncertain too: an old record says only a county, a hospital’s official name no longer exists, or a death happened while traveling, at sea, or far from home. Our approach matches the rule for time: state the uncertainty.
