# Star Register Alternatives for a Memorial Star

> If you are choosing a memorial star for someone who died or a pet you lost: first, Star Register (starregister.org) and Online Star Register (OSR) are different companies. This guide compares six alternatives on price, delivery and transparency, and explains what a “registry” actually records.

If you are choosing a memorial star for someone who died or a pet you lost, first disambiguate: Star Register (starregister.org) is not Online Star Register (osr.org) — different companies, different prices. Star Register sells Deluxe, Supernova and Twin kits; its FAQ says a PDF certificate is emailed within 24 hours; it lets you choose a constellation and shows prices at checkout rather than on its public page (verify the total there). Alternatives include ISR (since 1979; digital from $29.95, printed unframed kit from $59, framed roughly $110–$190), OSR ($29 digital, with an app), Name A Star (from $19.95 on sale), Star-Registration.com (regional pricing), Star Name Registry (UK delivery, kits from £19.99), and a different approach: a real HYG-catalog star computed from the date, time and place of passing — $19.99, digital only, coordinates recomputable. Every commercial “registration” exists only in that company’s private database; none is an official naming.

## If you are here because someone died

This guide is for people choosing a memorial for someone who died or a pet they lost. Star Register also sells memorial packages, so you will meet it; the six options below are framed for memorializing a person or a pet.

If you want a gift for a living person — a birthday, a couple, a new baby — a registry is often the better fit; there is a section near the end on exactly that.

## First, which Star Register?

A search for “Star Register” can mean at least three different things: starregister.org (the Star Register this guide is about), osr.org (Online Star Register, or OSR), and the generic category “star registry.” Star Register and OSR are separate companies with different packaging, prices and delivery; AI summaries in search results sometimes blend them, so the domain is the safest thing to check before ordering.

There is another layer of similar domains: Star-Registration.com and StarRegistration.net are different sites and do not share a price list. “Name A Star” is a generic phrase used by several companies. Confirm which site you are on before comparing anything.

## What Star Register sells

Three kit tiers: Deluxe, Supernova and Twin. Orders arrive as a PDF by email within 24 hours, with a certificate, star chart/coordinates and gift kit; you can choose a constellation, and each star is allocated once in its registry. Prices are not shown on the public page but at checkout — not a problem in itself, but it means you have to reach checkout to compare the total. Verify the total at checkout.

It fits “I want a ready-made gift kit, and I would like to choose the constellation.” It does not fit “I want the cheapest certificate” or “I want the star tied to a moment” — those are in the alternatives below.

## Six alternatives, and how they differ from Star Register

- **International Star Registry (ISR)** — Vs Star Register: operating since 1979, the oldest brand; a fuller print and framing line, with digital from $29.95, a printed unframed kit from $59 and framed options roughly $110–$190 (checked November 2026); but you do not choose the constellation, and a 24-hour PDF is not its main pitch.
- **Online Star Register (OSR)** — Vs Star Register: digital around $29, with a clear digital entry price; OSR Star Map and a locating app; physical gift packs too. Note that it is osr.org, not starregister.org.
- **Name A Star (nameastar.com)** — Vs Star Register: certificates from $19.95 on sale, a lower price; printed, framed, double-star and memorial packages; but “choose your constellation” is not part of its public pitch.
- **Star-Registration.com** — Vs Star Register: prices by regional store, with digital PDF and printed gift-set tiers, a visible star or constellation choice, an online register and a sky app; easier for non-US buyers paying in local currency.
- **Star Name Registry (star-name-registry.com)** — Vs Star Register: a UK company with fast, often free UK delivery; packages include a certificate, star map, constellation booklet and Star Finder app; kits from £19.99 (sale; regular £29.99), with star-map, silver-necklace and twin-star sets at £59.99–£149.99 (page prices checked November 2026). US recipients need to allow for international shipping.
- **A Star Named (us)** — Not a registry: you do not pick a star; we compute the real HYG star nearest the zenith at the exact date, time and place of passing. $19.99, digital only, recomputable coordinates, a 3D return to that night’s sky. Vs Star Register: no physical kit and no constellation choice; what you get instead is a star tied to that moment.

## What “registration” actually records

In one sentence: registration records an entry in that company’s own database, not an official name in astronomy. The IAU is the body responsible for formally naming celestial objects; it does not sell names and does not recognize any commercial star registry. You are buying a keepsake, not a title. This is true of all six providers, including us.

So “which registry is more official” is the wrong question. What actually separates providers: a named catalog, coordinates you can check, a plain statement that the IAU does not recognize it, and clear refund and delivery terms. Those four things are more useful than the word “registry.”

## If you want the star tied to a moment

Our approach changes the question: not “which star would you like to name,” but “which star was overhead at that moment.” Enter the exact date, time and place of passing, and the algorithm finds the star nearest the zenith at that instant in the HYG catalog (107,838 stars). The same inputs always produce the same star, and its RA/Dec (J2000), distance and ID can be recomputed in Stellarium or any sky app.

The trade-off, plainly: $19.99 is digital only — no star-map poster, no frame, no gift box; the certificate is a PDF. If the unboxing is the point, Star Register or Star Name Registry fits better.

## Who should still choose Star Register

- **You want to choose the constellation** — This is a clear Star Register advantage over ISR and over us; if the constellation matters, it is the more direct choice.
- **You want a PDF within 24 hours** — Its digital delivery promise is within 24 hours — faster than physical and more explicit than some registries.
- **You want a ready-made gift kit** — Certificate, star chart/coordinates and gift kit in one order; no printing or frame shopping on your side.
- **You do not mind checkout pricing** — Its public page does not list prices; if you are willing to reach checkout to compare totals, that is not a problem.

## If this is a gift for someone living

- **Birthday / couples / new baby** — A registry fits better: ISR’s printed gift box, OSR’s digital-plus-app, or Name A Star’s low-cost certificate are built for gifting a living person. We do not sell generic gifts; this section is the honest exit.
- **Memorializing someone who died / a pet** — Keep reading the checklist below: you want a star tied to that moment, not an assigned star.

## Before you buy, check five things

- **1. Domain** — starregister.org or osr.org? Star-Registration.com or StarRegistration.net? Confirm first.
- **2. Total price** — Add kit, shipping, tax and add-ons at checkout; the homepage price alone understates the total.
- **3. Catalog and coordinates** — Ask which catalog is used and whether you get RA/Dec or an ID; if it can go into a sky app, it is verifiable.
- **4. IAU disclosure** — A plain “not an official naming” is more credible than one buried in an FAQ.
- **5. Refunds and delivery** — Can you refund after the PDF is sent? Who pays return shipping for physical goods? Read the terms before ordering.

## How to start (our first step is free)

Enter the date, time and place of passing and see that moment’s sky and nearest real star immediately — pay the $19.99 only if it feels right. And if this guide convinces you to choose Star Register, that is fine too: at least now you know it is not OSR.

## FAQ

**Is Star Register the same as Online Star Register?**

No. Star Register is starregister.org; Online Star Register is osr.org. Different companies, different kits and prices, even though search summaries sometimes blend them.

**Is Star Register legit?**

It is a commercial keepsake service, not an official naming body; the IAU recognizes no commercial star registry. Judge it on four things: a named catalog, checkable coordinates, a plain IAU disclosure, and clear refund and delivery terms.

**What is the best alternative to Star Register?**

It depends. For the oldest brand and a printed gift box: ISR. For a cheaper digital option with an app: OSR. For a low-cost digital certificate: Name A Star. For UK delivery: Star Name Registry. For local-currency checkout outside the US: Star-Registration.com. For a star tied to a moment: us.

**Can I choose the star myself?**

Star Register lets you choose a constellation; ISR and OSR draw from their own catalogs. Our model is different: you do not choose — the exact moment and place of passing determine the star, which is the point: determinism and recomputability.

**Is Star Register a good choice for a memorial?**

If you want to choose a constellation, get a PDF within 24 hours and receive a gift kit, it can work; but it records the star you picked from its catalog, not the star that was overhead at the moment they passed. To tie the star to that moment, you need a computed memorial star.

# Star Register

> 如果你在为逝者或离世的宠物找纪念星:先分清 Star Register(starregister.org)和 Online Star Register(OSR)是两家。

如果你是在为逝者或离世的宠物找纪念星,先消歧:Star Register(starregister.org)不是 Online Star Register(osr.org),两家公司、两套价格。 替代方案包括:ISR(1979 年至今,数字版 $29.95 起、印刷无框套装 $59 起、加框约 $110–$190)、OSR(数字版 $29、有 App)、Name A Star(促销 $19.95 起)、Star-Registration.com(按国家分店定价)、Star Name Registry(英国配送,套装 £19.99 起),以及一种不同做法——从离世那一刻的日期、时间与地点算出 HYG 星表里的真实恒星,$19.99 纯数字、坐标可复算。

搜「Star Register」的人,至少可能指三家不同的东西:starregister.org(本文说的 Star Register)、osr.org(Online Star Register,简称 OSR),以及泛指的「star registry」(星空注册服务)。

还有一层相似域名:Star-Registration.com 和 StarRegistration.net 是两个不同的网站,价格表也不同。

## Star Register

注意它是 osr.org,不是 starregister.org。

Star Register

- **1 域名** — starregister.org 还是 osr.org?Star-Registration.com 还是 StarRegistration.net?

Star Register 是 starregister.org;Online Star Register 是 osr.org。

**Star Register

**Star Register

**Star Register
