# How Far Away Is My Star?

> Making sense of “hundreds of light-years” — and how the distance is measured.

Stars in our catalog sit at real distances from tens to hundreds of light-years (Regulus, for instance, is 79.3 light-years away). Distances come from parallax measurements by the Hipparcos satellite — the same figure printed on your certificate, verifiable in any star catalog.

## How far? Two comparisons

- **Sunlight to Earth** — 8 minutes 20 seconds
- **Light to the nearest star** — about 4.24 years

## How distance is measured

Astronomers use parallax, the same trick your eyes use: as Earth moves to opposite sides of its orbit, nearby stars shift slightly against distant ones. The bigger the shift, the closer the star. The Hipparcos satellite measured this shift for 118,000 stars — that is where HYG distances come from.

## What distance means when you look up

Distance does not change how bright a star looks: a bright star can be far, a nearby one faint. But knowing the distance makes the sky feel three-dimensional — that light travelled all those years just to reach you.
