# How We Find Their Home Among the Stars

> Time + place → the zenith of that moment → the nearest real star in a true catalog. Deterministic, reproducible and verifiable.

Enter the date, time and place of passing, and we compute — with standard astronomical algorithms — where the zenith pointed that instant, in right ascension and declination. Then, among the 107,838 real stars of the HYG catalog, we find the one nearest that point that is still unnamed. Same moment, same place, always the same star: the sky decides, no lottery involved.

## Step 1: understand the "zenith"

The zenith is the point straight above your head. Picture the sky as an inverted bowl resting on your horizon: the zenith is the crown of that bowl. Because Earth rotates, the sky sweeps 15° past you every hour — so which point is overhead is fixed by exactly two inputs: where you are (which sets the circle of the zenith) and what time it is (which sets where along that circle the zenith points). Two inputs, that is all.

## Step 2: translate "straight up" into catalog language

Catalogs do not describe positions in “up, down, left, right” but in right ascension (RA) and declination (Dec) — and so does the zenith: at that instant it is an exact point in the celestial coordinate system. The chain runs roughly: date and time → local sidereal time (converting your clock to the sky’s rotation angle) → latitude and longitude give the zenith’s RA and Dec. These are standard transforms — the same ones planetarium software and telescope controllers use.

- **Local sidereal time** — It maps “what time is it” to “where has the sky turned” — Earth rotates 360° in about 23h 56m of sidereal time
- **Zenith declination** — Roughly the observer’s latitude (New York ≈ +40.7°): latitude sets the circle the zenith travels on
- **Zenith right ascension** — Set by local sidereal time: one hour of clock time moves the zenith 15° along its circle

## Step 3: a nearest-neighbour search over a real catalog

The catalog is HYG v4.1 — 107,838 real stars merged from Hipparcos, Gliese, Yale and other genuine catalogs, spanning all 88 IAU constellations, each with J2000 coordinates, magnitude, distance and spectral type. We measure the angular separation from the zenith to every star and pick the nearest one that is still unnamed. A tie? The one closer to Earth wins. Deterministic rules, no human fiddling.

## What if you do not know the exact time?

This is the most common situation, and it has the most common answer: use the local sunset. We compute the true sunset for that date and place with a standard formula (the Sun’s lower limb 0.833° below the horizon) and run the whole calculation on that moment — equally deterministic and reproducible. If that day has no sunset (polar day or night), the form asks for an exact time instead.

## How to verify the result yourself

The free preview lays the star out: catalog ID, angular distance from the zenith, coordinates, distance. Type the coordinates into Stellarium or any planetarium app and you will find the same star; open our 3D night sky and it stops at that exact moment. Because the coordinates are real, everything can be re-checked — which is exactly what sets this apart from a line printed on paper.

## FAQ

**Can the same inputs give different results?**

No. The math is pure: the same date, time and place recompute to the same zenith and the same star. The only variable is whether that star has just been named by someone else — if so, the page honestly asks you to search again.
