# A Family Ceremony: Reading Their Name Among the Stars

> A family ceremony script you can follow as written: opening, the name, one sentence each, looking up together, sharing, closing. About 30 minutes — no officiant, no religious background, nothing to buy.

No officiant, no venue, no spending: pick a night, gather, and walk through six steps — opening, saying their name in turn, one concrete sentence each, looking up at their star together, sharing the year, closing. A ceremony’s power is not in the form; it is saying their name out loud, together, at the same moment.

## Why saying the name is the heart of it

A name spoken aloud brings the person into the room. Modern grief theory keeps returning to one idea — “continuing bonds”: healthy grieving is not letting go, it is continuing the relationship in another form. That is exactly what a ceremony does: not a goodbye, but a place to come back to every year. That is why this script puts the name at the center: no speeches needed, no staying strong — just the name, said out loud.

## Before you start: what you need

- **Time** — One convenient evening, 30–40 minutes end to end. It does not have to wait for the anniversary — a holiday, a birthday, any day you miss them will do.
- **Place** — Home, a balcony, a backyard — anywhere with a view toward the sky. Not being able to see stars does not matter (see step 4).
- **People** — Two people are enough; the more voices in the name-round, the heavier it lands. Children can join — see below.
- **Props (all optional)** — A photo, a candle, a printed star chart or certificate, a printed opening line. None of it is required to start.
- **One person to hold it** — Decide in advance who opens, who closes, who watches the time — so everyone else can simply be present.

## The script: six steps

- **Step 1 · Opening (2 min)** — The host can read this as written: “We are here tonight to say [name] out loud. They went ahead of us, to the stars. Tonight we are not here for regrets — only for saying their name.”
- **Step 2 · The name (3 min)** — In turn, each person says their name — with the relationship if you like: “my mother, Rosa.” Go around twice: the first round light and quick, the second slow and heavy.
- **Step 3 · One sentence each (10 min)** — Each person offers one sentence about them, with a single rule: make it concrete, not a judgment. “She always cooked half a bowl of noodles too many” beats “she was a good person.” Concreteness brings presence back.
- **Step 4 · Look up together (5 min)** — Open their star page or chart, find their star, and say it out loud: “See that one? That one is theirs.” Cloudy, too bright, invisible — just face the direction and look up. The ceremony honors the direction, not the weather.
- **Step 5 · Report back (5 min)** — Each person tells them one thing from the year — in the present tense, as if they can hear: “Your grandson got into university.”
- **Step 6 · Closing (3 min)** — The host closes, possibly as written: “The name has been said; the star has been seen. Next year, this night, we will be here again.”

## Can children join?

Yes — and it is a good idea. No elaborate explanation is needed: give a child a role (saying the name, holding the photo, lighting the candle) and it works better than any speech; participating is itself the gentlest way to learn about loss. If they want to step away mid-ceremony, let them, without pressure or comment. For age-by-age language, the same principles as in our pet-loss piece apply: concrete words, never euphemisms like “fell asleep.”

## Apart, or alone, it still works

- **Long-distance** — Video call, agree on the same minute to look up, take turns saying the name and the year’s news over the line. Distance does not break “the same moment.”
- **On your own** — Follow all six steps; in step 3, write a few lines to them and read them aloud. Fewer voices does not weaken it — a single voice often says the whole thing.
- **Indoors or limited mobility** — Face a window, put the printed chart on the table, and do step 4 toward the sky outside.

## Afterwards

Save the script and do it again next year, the same night. Repetition is part of the ritual: the first year is the hardest, and each year after it slowly becomes a place you can return to rather than a wound you carry. If the night leaves you heavy, that is normal — take care of yourself, do not carry it alone, and if you or someone close to you is in acute grief, reach out for professional support.

## FAQ

**Do we need an officiant or any props?**

Neither. Every step includes words you can read as written, and a family member can hold the role; all props are optional.

**We are not religious — can we still do this?**

Yes. The script deliberately contains nothing religious — it is simply saying a name together, at the same moment, which works in any culture.

**What if we cannot see any stars that night?**

Do it anyway. Face the direction of their star and look up — clouds and city light can block the view but not the meaning, and the star page is always there to reopen.
