## Why some are visible and some are not

- **Brightness (magnitude)** — Stars differ enormously in brightness — the smaller the number, the brighter. Yours comes from a real catalogue, and brightness varies: a few show to the naked eye from dark skies, many need binoculars, and some only a telescope will reach. - **Light pollution** — The glow of a city sky can be brighter than the star itself. Same night, same star: invisible downtown, visible once you drive out of town — that is not your eyes failing, and it is not the star.
- **Distance ≠ brightness** — Far does not mean faint: a giant tens of light-years away can outshine a nearer star hundreds of light-years off. So “our star is too far to see” does not hold — it depends on which star it is.

## To actually see it: three steps

- **1. Get away from the lights** — Even a modest step outside the city changes the sky noticeably. Find a spot away from direct streetlights and give your eyes about 20 minutes to adapt — which means no phone screen.
- **2. Bring binoculars** — 7×50 or 10×50 binoculars reach roughly two to three magnitudes fainter than the naked eye — where many memorial stars sit. Locate the direction by coordinates in a planetarium app first, then point the binoculars (“How to Read Your Certificate” walks through it).

## What “I can’t see it” does not mean

It does not mean the star is fake, the money wasted, or the service dishonest — the star exists and its coordinates verify in any catalogue; the limits of the eye and the honesty of a seller are unrelated things.
